overwhelmed

I find myself stressing out over things that have not even happened yet.

My biggest goal at the moment is to purchase my own home. I have been a renter before and I find that it is a waste of money. Why spend so much each month on a place to live when at the end of the lease you have nothing to show for it? Why not put that money towards a mortgage? Granted it takes a while, but eventually the residence becomes yours.

Step one of the goal: Save up some money while paying down debt.

Step one is well under way. What I'm stressing about now is if I'll have the money to afford a house. I keep thinking that yes, I have so much money each month that I could put towards a mortgage. And I think, yes, I can afford to have a house!

But then I think, what about the power bill? And the water bill? And the internet bill? And all of those things that I'll need to have to be in a house. Yes, I could get a roommate, but something inside of me wants so desperately to have MY house and be on my own.

Then I get discouraged.

And then I think: Why am I getting discouraged already? Shouldn't I just trust that if it's meant to be and if I work hard and smart towards my goal that it will happen?

If I think about it, it's going to take time to save up the money that I'll need for inspections and closing costs. During that time, I could pay off one of my student loans. That right there will free up $60 a month. That could be half an electric bill. Or it could be a water bill or an internet bill.

I am not giving up. I want my house. I need my house. I am 24 years old and I think I'm a little old to be dependent on others. I want to be self sufficient. I think I can do this.

Then I think: You know what would help supplement your income? Writing a book. And getting it published.

Yeah, I think I'll do that.

leadership

I haven't written in this for quite some time. I just haven't had much to say lately because while I've been keeping busy, it's pretty much the same old, same old.

We've been working really hard in the store and this week, the product starts coming in! I'm so excited because this is where I will be especially helpful. I'm really good at merchandising and setting up displays. It's going to be so pretty once we're all done.

It's been a pretty awesome experience for me so far. Last tuesday I decided that I was sick of working in the downstairs, so I told all of my coworkers that we had to finish up the downstairs that day because I refused to work down there on wednesday. Well, the goal was accepted as a challenge by myself and everyone else who worked that day. And we accomplished the goal! We were all so excited to finish up the downstairs.

Because of my success in the downstairs on tuesday, when we got into the store on wednesday, everyone turned to me for direction on what to do in the upstairs. I was stunned, but I rose to the occasion and took charge of the work that day. It did not go unnoticed. One of my managers thanked me for taking charge and being the leader that day.

The next day, I was ready to get back into the hard work and finish this stuff up. Twenty minutes in, a higher up (similar to a district manager) came and said he wanted to reassign me. He had me help out an employee from another store who was setting up our antiques. That was pretty neat, being able to help decorate the store. I was a little concerned that I had been pulled from the harder work because it was unsatisfactory. I talked to my manager and it turns out that, nope, it was not because my work was unsatisfactory. It was because I have an opinion and I'm not afraid to voice it. Which is seen as a very good thing.

I'm so excited that I have been able to set myself apart from the others and step out as a leader in my store. I always strive for the best and it makes me happy that within a month I have already started showing myself as a strong personality and an effective leader.

In other news, Melissa and I are having another sale on saturday at the flea market. I think I'll be lucky to break a hundred bucks out of this, but whatever I make will be more than what I had before.

workin' hard

I have been so busy the past few days! My new job is totally awesome! It's been pretty interesting being on the construction site where the store will be. Things are really coming together and we're hoping that the bottom floor will be ready very soon for us to put the finishing touches on fixtures and what not. The top floor still has quite a ways to go.

I got my first battle injury today! We were sliding two by fours down a chute we have and the girl sliding them down lost control of one just as I was turning around to grab the next board. I wasn't expecting it and so it slid right into my left knee and rebounded on my right one. I have a technicolor bruise the size of a half dollar (maybe even bigger!) on my left knee. It's all kinds of blue and purple, lol! But I don't mind. It only hurts if I put pressure directly on the spot.

I'm also very actively working towards trying to unload some of my things. My very good friend, Melissa, had a great idea. Sell the crap you don't need and start actively paying down your debt! She went through her things and found a bunch of stuff she wasn't using. Then she talked to her friends who donated items for her to sell so she could keep the profit to pay off some bills. She actually did very well at the sale.

So many people wanted to donate so much stuff that we're going to have another sale at the end of the month and this time, I will have some stuff at the sale too. I want to make a few extra dollars, but more importantly I feel like it's time to lighten the load.

I am holding on to so much stuff and most of it is just trinkets from the past ten or fifteen years that really don't mean anything. Sure, there are items that have sentimental value, but most of what I have is just crap.

My next big goal is to buy a house. I'm very excited about this idea. I really don't want to rent again because I feel like it's a waste of money. Anyways, when I finally get to the point where I can buy a house, I want to be able to start over. I want to have only the possessions that mean something to me and then I want to rebuild a home from the ground up.

The best way to do that is to throw away, sell, or donate the things I'm not using or are just plain garbage. This plan is really killing two birds with one stone because before I can buy a house, I want to be 100% debt free. And with this sale, that will give me a boost to getting there!

I'm really excited about this new direction I have. I've been drifting for so long and now I have a goal, a plan, and a hell of a lot of motivation to get there!

mast general store

I have a new job! I couldn't be happier right now!

I got the call yesterday morning that the job I applied for about a month ago came through and I will be starting on April 1st! I'm going to be an employee of the new Mast General Store that is opening up in downtown Columbia at the end of May. I'm excited because we're being brought in early so that we can help set the store and get it ready for the grand opening. How cool is it to open the doors to a store that you helped to create? I am SO excited!

I went into work yesterday with my letter of resignation. I knew that it would be upsetting to management because my job is not easy to fill. It's not something you can just jump into, you need a good bit of training for it. What happened next I was NOT expecting.

My manager got pretty upset at the news. I tried to tell her that there were options for who could replace me, but all she could say was that she wanted me at the store because I do a good job. I went back to work and a few minutes later she asked me to come back to the office when I had a minute. She asked me if this was just about money, blah blah blah. I didn't really want to get into everything, but what it came down to was she did everything she could to convince me to stay. She offered me more money and wanted to know why I was unhappy.

I told her I'd think about it, but I knew that my mind was already made up. I just couldn't seem to get her to understand that. Today, my district manager came up to me and asked to speak with me in the office. I asked if I was in trouble, even though I knew what this was about. That's when the ass-kissing started. He told me I was never in trouble that I was great and fantastic and blah blah blah.

He made a strong case (well, as strong as he could) for me to stay with Staples. He offered more money and wouldn't stop talking about all this money I would supposedly be getting if I stayed. He kept talking about how great I am and how I'm one of the best experts he has out of 50 some-odd copy and print experts he has. It was all very flattering, and I know why they want me to stay. But my mind was made up. I sat and listened politely while they talked, but I WANT to leave!

I'm so excited about this new store and I couldn't make them understand that. My DM did NOT have a happy look on his face when I declined to stay. He even said "Yeah, it may be fun but it's still work." If I hadn't already had my mind completely made up to leave, that would have done me in. Because my stress levels and my unhappiness is a much bigger factor to my leaving than the money. There isn't enough money they could legitimately offer me to make me stay. I want to be happy.

My only concern is that I flat out refused them and their offers to keep me here. I really hope that they won't be, I won't say nasty because I don't think either of them would outright be nasty, but I will say rude. I'm hoping they won't be rude or angry with me over the next two weeks.

In other news, I got myself back on my budget. I will be honest. I went on a food bender the past two weeks. I will not divulge how much money I have spent on food, but it's been a lot. I hit such a low point and was so stressed out and depressed that I couldn't seem to stop myself from eating. Man, I was hungry all the time! I knew that I shouldn't spend the money, but the justification to do it was stronger than the justification to not do it.

But it is all behind me. I adjusted my budget to compensate for my...er, problem, and I have myself back on track. The cool thing is, I was still able to allow for more gas money AND I am going to be making more money starting April 1!!

Anyways, I think I've got things back on track. At least, I hope so.

the ups and downs of life

Yesterday was certainly...interesting, to say the least.

Yesterday morning wasn't terrible. I got to sleep in before I had to go to work. I had spent the night at a friend's house and had to go back home for my uniform. Then I found out that my mom was sick and she wasn't sure if it was bronchitis or the flu, so I asked my friend if I could stay for a few days while she got over it. I definitely don't want to get sick and miss any time at work.

On my way to work, I'm sitting at a stoplight and I see a homeless man on the corner. I looked over at him and realized that I had a few bucks in cash in my wallet. I looked up and realized that the light was still red and we weren't moving at all so I quickly reached in my wallet, rolled my window down and called out to him. He asked God to bless me as he took the two dollars I gave to him.

A smile immediately came on my face and I turned my attention to the cars in front of me. I happened to glance up in my rearview mirror and see that the car behind me was also giving money to the homeless man. My smile got even bigger! How cool is that? One person does one good thing (even as small as two dollars) and it's a ripple. Someone sees it and thinks, "Hey! I can spare a few extra dollars too!"

That definitely put me in a good mood going into work.

Unfortunately the good mood didn't last. :(

Work has been a mess lately. We have had a REALLY hard time finding people who are willing to work hard and get the job done. I don't want to get too much into some of the other problems because I don't want to publicly trash people because that's just not good form. But let's just say there is one person who works for the same company I do that makes my job much more difficult (unnecessarily, I might add). This person is causing me great amounts of stress and unfortunately lashed out at me last night, causing my good mood to turn.

I was quite upset on my dinner break last night. But my bestest friend in the whole world heard I wasn't having a good day so he brought me a candy bar on my break. :) That put a smile back on my face and I was able to get through the rest of the night with a fairly even mood.

I think it's interesting how things can turn around so many times in one day. I went out to karaoke last night and am glad that I did. I got to see an old friend I hadn't seen since October. I had a great time and my sisters even came out for a little bit!

Now, I'm off to have lunch with my family and then spend the rest of my day relaxing and preparing for the six day work week I have coming up.

sleep, bad drivers, and rainy days

It was a dreary day today.

I actually happen to like Mondays for the sole reason that I work a 7-3 shift. I know that most people flip at the idea of having to get up earlier, but I love it. It means that I get off an hour earlier than normal and for some reason, that makes all the difference in the world when counting down minutes until I can go home.

Unfortunately today my coworker was ill and was late arriving to work. He still wasn't there when I left, but I had to leave. I thought that a 7a - 4:30p shift was long enough. Not to mention things were pretty dead at the store. I blame the dreary weather.

Going home was an adventure in itself. As I was attempting to turn out of the parking lot (left, I might add) there was someone across the street trying to turn right. This person stops, as he should, and then sits there as no cars are coming before he turns. I know that he has the right of way so I don't make a move because I know if I do, I'll cause an accident. But he just sits there! Finally he turns and I turn after him. Then he decides that crawling would be the better thing to do instead of driving at the speed limit.

Unfortunately this douche bag won't let up. I can't get around him because I'm on a one lane road. It's just irritating the mess out of me. As luck would have it, I have to follow this loser onto the high way. He tries to get onto a high way of 60mph going only 30mph. I really thought he or I was going to cause an accident.

Luckily he sped up (but just barely) and I only had to follow him for another mile before he got off the highway. I know it's a rainy day, but it wasn't even raining when I was driving home! There was no need for the ridiculously "cautious" driving.

Gah, anyways.

The 2010 fiscal year is finally over. Yesterday started the 2011 fiscal year and I couldn't be more excited. I crunched all the numbers for last year and it's a proven fact that I was the best performing head of my department for last year. We had three experts in my department during last year and I out performed the other two. I was pretty happy to find that out. I'm really excited to start this new year and see how well we can do.

I only have a few screws to tighten up before we're running at maximum efficiency and full speed. :)

Now I'm working on some notes for the story that I'm currently working on. That will probably take me all night. I only got three and a half hours of sleep last night but it doesn't really bother me. I actually feel pretty great. Getting up this morning was hard, but once I got going I was fine and barely felt tired at all!

I've come to the conclusion that I don't require a lot of sleep. Actually, I really don't like to sleep. I feel like it's such a waste of perfectly good time where I could be doing something constructive. Sleeping is not constructive, not in my book. To me, it's the ultimate lazy act. Now, I do know it's required of humans to sleep so that they don't die, but I don't think it should be used as a favorite pastime.

Gah, I've spent enough time on this thing. I've got to get back to work.

I'm Back!

I'm back everyone!

I had honestly forgotten that I had started this blog, silly of me really. I had gotten so busy with work and life that I just never even saw the "Blogspot" link under my favorites...even though I look at them every day.

What's going on with me?

To put it simply: A LOT!

First, I'm losing weight at a rapid pace and I am loving it. I love how I feel about myself, I love how my clothes fit. I can't wait until I can fit into some of the clothes I wore in high school. I'm so close and I know if I continue keeping an eye on my portion control, I'll be there before I know it.

Second, I've dedicated 2011 to writing! That's right! I'm working on my own pieces, I'm doing more reading, and I have taken up journaling again. Well, I've taken up journaling again - ish. I write when I need to, but it's not every day. I'm hoping that I can bring the blog up to an almost daily basis. I mean how cool would it be to have a small following of friends here on my blog?

I've decided to really put myself into this. I invested in some filing items of sorts. Just a place to keep all my different stories and ideas until they are all finished to perfection. I can keep all of my notes and ideas about one story in one place so I don't have to constantly go digging for them amongst a dozen notebooks and binders.

Third, I've recently (within the past two months or so) started an actual relationship with my older brother. I have an older half brother by my dad and despite the fact that I'm almost 24 years old, he and I have never had a relationship. Well, I found him on facebook and friended him. We've had a fairly regular contact ever since and it's been nice. We don't always see eye to eye, but we do have some common ground. It's been fantastic feeling like someone's younger sister for the first time in my life.

My holidays were fantastic. The best I've had in a few years. I was beyond ecstatic about the gifts I both gave and received. I was shocked and pleased that everyone behaved themselves this year. It was definitely a wonderful time.

I was saddened at the loss of my great-grandmother, Margaret "Memere" Gallant on the 28th of December. She was 98 and had lived a good, long life and was ready to go home. I was fortunate enough that when my mom and I went up to Boston in November, she remembered us long enough for us to say goodbye. We both knew that we'd probably never see her again.

This new year has done wonders for me. I'm reading a fantastic book, "Total Money Makeover" by Dave Ramsey so that I can learn better financial responsibility. I am doing something that I love and I've been trying desperately to have a better outlook on life in general (especially my dumb ass job - ok, so I'm still working on that one). I feel better this year and it's been amazing.

I will do anything to make sure this feeling lasts.

money money money

"Money, money, money,
must be funny
in a rich man's world.
Money, money, money,
Always sunny
in the rich man's world.
Aha!
All the things I could do,
if I had a little money.
It's a rich man's world!"

ABBA sang it true. It's definitely a rich man's world.

I feel so stuck when it comes to finances. It seems that I'm always trying to be careful and I always end up with a really low balance in my account. Then I'm even more careful. And then...BAM! Overdraft fees.

I HATE overdraft fees. I mean, the guy who's CEO of my bank (Bank of America) makes millions of dollars every year. You wanna know what I made last year? I barely broke 10 grand. Yep, that's it. $10,000 last year. I made so little money that even the GOVERNMENT gave me back all of the money they took from me last year. That's how pathetic I am.

What I hate most is that in reality, how I spent my money, I should have only been charged one overdraft fee. But no, they hold off on completely processing the small transaction that should have gone through no problem until the BIG transaction (a check) comes in. Then they take the big transaction out, put me in the negative, and THEN take out the small one so they can hit me with two overdraft fees.

It's really pissing me off that these board of directors and CEOs can just take people's money like this. I mean, I make SO LITTLE and I'm trying SO HARD and it just doesn't seem to matter.

I'm in desperate need of financial help. Luckily, my mom is going to help me create a budget. I think when I finally move in with her (which will be really soon, especially after this) it will help me even more. I think I might even need to have her put on my account again. If I know that she can monitor my online banking, it might help me be a little more discrete (spelling?) with my spending. What I love is that my mom is not judgmental. She understands that I'm just NOT GOOD with money. I think she understands that I need someone to point out my mistakes with love and kindness and not judgment. She understands that I don't need someone to yell at me, but rather to help me.

In other news, Kay left. She spent most of the week with us and it was really nice to spend time with her. What was also really nice, was talking to Felicia on the phone last night. I hadn't really talked to her since she left SC back about three weeks ago or so. I've missed her like crazy. It was so nice to hear that she is doing SO WELL in her new job in Florida.

Right now? I'm going to attempt to relax. I had a long, rough day with some driving and then I had to work. Our A/C is out in several places at work. After about an hour and a half I started feeling super light headed, dizzy, and I found I couldn't focus. Luckily I got some water and a small snack on my break to help with my low blood sugar and my dehydration. It was all I could do to get home, get in my pajamas, and then collapse in my recliner. I have to work early in the morning, so I'm just going to get a shower and some sleep.

Maybe I can find it in me to draw up a bubble bath and really relax. Who knows?
